The American Friends of the River & Rowing Museum promotes cooperation between the rowing worlds of the USA and the UK. The Friends help to tell the great stories of international rowing history; support touring exhibitions which celebrate rowing; help to acquire and preserve objects precious to the sport and build friendships between the rowing enthusiasts of our two nations.
On the banks of the Thames, near the course of the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta, the River & Rowing Museum was opened in 1998 by HM Queen Elizabeth II. Since then, both the Museum and its architecture have won international acclaim and many awards. The Schwarzenbach International Rowing Gallery is the first gallery in the world dedicated to rowing. It is a unique and awe-inspiring space. From the origins of the sport in Ancient Greece to the punishing regimes of today’s dedicated athletes, the gallery is the international centre for rowing’s heritage. Part of one of the finest rowing collections in the world - the Thomas E. Weil Collection - is displayed in the gallery. Tom saw his first Henley Royal Regatta as a boy and competed in it for Yale in 1970. |
